Rickey Medlocke (born February 17, 1950) is an American musician best known as the guitarist and a vocalist for the Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd. He is also known for leading the Southern rock band Blackfoot.
Medlocke's musical journey began early, and he was initially a drummer in Lynyrd Skynyrd during their formative years in the early 1970s. However, he left to form Blackfoot, where he served as the lead singer, guitarist, and primary songwriter. Blackfoot's music blended hard rock with Native American influences (Medlocke is of Native American heritage, specifically Lakota Sioux).
Blackfoot achieved significant success in the late 1970s and early 1980s with albums like Strikes, which featured the hit song "Train, Train," co-written by Medlocke's grandfather, Shorty Medlocke. Other notable Blackfoot songs include "Highway Song" and "Dry County."
After Blackfoot disbanded, Medlocke rejoined Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1996 following their reunion after a tragic plane crash in 1977 that claimed the lives of several band members. Since then, he has been a consistent member of Lynyrd Skynyrd, contributing guitar work, vocals, and songwriting. His continued presence in the band helps maintain a link to their original sound and legacy.
In addition to his work with Lynyrd Skynyrd, Medlocke has occasionally pursued solo projects and appeared as a guest musician on various recordings. He remains an important figure in Southern rock music, known for his guitar skills, distinctive vocals, and contributions to two influential bands.
